Although uncommon, prion diseases are incurable and bring dementia swiftly followed by death. In the case of spontaneous Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (sCJD), the most common prion disease, half of patients are dead within six months of symptom onset. About 40% of sCJD patients develop eye-related symptoms serious enough to warrant a consultation with an ophthalmologist.

Google, which also receives precise location information from apps that use its ad services, said it modified that data to make it less exact. Apple and Google have a financial interest in keeping developers happy, but both have taken steps to limit location data collection. After examining maps showing the locations extracted by their apps, Ms. Lee, the nurse, and Ms. Magrin, the teacher, immediately limited what data those apps could get.
